Here is a useful tip when choosing a water fountain pump for your pond or water feature. Use a garden hose to try out different water flow rates and by adjusting your tap, see what flow rate gives you the desired effect.

Then, use that same flow rate to fill a 5 litre bucket. Measure the time it takes to fill 5 litres and that will give you a flow rate. Work out how many litres the hose is flowing per minute.

Let’s say the hose fills a 5 litre bucket in 20 seconds.

Therefore, in 60 seconds the hose will flow 15 litres. Or in one hour, the hose will flow 900 litres.

But we have just calculated the flow rate at a theoretical ground level. We know the flow rate goes down if we have to push the water up a 1.0m hose inside a water feature.

You will need to choose a pump with approximately 1,800 litres per hour flow rate at ground level to achieve a flow rate of 900 litres per hour at a height of 1.0m.
