Testing Your Water Flow Rate with a Bucket
Once you’ve found a setting you like, use that same flow to fill a 5 litre bucket. Measure the time it takes to fill 5 litres, and that will tell you how much water is moving per minute.
Let’s say the hose fills a 5 litre bucket in 20 seconds. In 60 seconds, that’s 15 litres. Scaled up to an hour, that comes to 900 litres.
This simple test takes the guesswork out of matching a pump to your feature. Rather than relying on marketing figures alone, you get a real-world number based on the exact look you’re after — whether that’s a gentle trickle or a bold cascade.
Adjusting Water Flow Rate for Height
The number we’ve just calculated is measured at ground level, with no resistance from height. In practice, most fountains and water features push water upward through a hose or spout, and that changes things considerably. Height creates resistance, similar to the friction losses seen in long pipe runs — the higher the water needs to travel, the more the flow rate drops off by the time it reaches the top.
As a rough guide, you’ll need to choose a pump rated at roughly double your target output to compensate for a 1.0m lift. So to achieve an output of 900 litres per hour at a height of 1.0m, you’d want a pump capable of around 1,800 litres per hour at ground level.
